Test your webcam online
Webcam Test shows you exactly what your camera sees, so you can check it works and looks right before a video call, interview, or recording. Press Start and allow camera access when prompted; your live preview appears. If you have more than one camera — a built-in one and an external webcam, say — choose the device you want from the list. The tool also reports the actual resolution and frame rate the camera is delivering, so you can confirm it is running at the quality you expect. A visible preview means the camera and its driver work and the browser has access. A black frame usually means a privacy shutter is closed, the wrong device is selected, or another app is using the camera. The video is shown to you live and is never recorded, saved, or uploaded — press Stop or close the tab and the camera light goes off immediately.
Common questions
Is my video recorded or uploaded?
No. The live preview is shown only in your browser. Nothing is recorded, saved, or transmitted anywhere, and the camera is released the instant you press Stop or close the tab.
Why does it ask for camera permission?
Browsers require your explicit permission before any page can use the camera. Click Allow when prompted. If you blocked it earlier, use the camera icon in the address bar to allow it, then press Start again.
The preview is black — what is wrong?
Check for a physical privacy shutter, close any other app using the camera (only one can use it at a time), confirm the correct device is selected, and make sure permission was granted. Switching cameras in the list re-tests instantly.
Can I pick which camera to test?
Yes. If your device has more than one camera, they appear in the dropdown after you grant access. Select any one to switch the live preview to it.
Which browsers support it?
Any modern browser with the getUserMedia API — current Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari. Camera access also needs a secure (https) connection, which this site uses.
