Test your typing speed

Pick a test length and start typing the words shown. The timer starts on your first keystroke. Each letter turns green when it matches and red when it does not, and new words keep appearing so you never run out. Your result is in words per minute, where a word is counted as five characters (spaces included), the usual convention. WPM counts only characters that match the text; raw WPM counts everything you typed; and accuracy is the share of keystrokes that were right when you typed them, so a mistake you fixed with Backspace still counts against it. The text is a random run of common lower-case words. Everything happens in your browser and nothing you type is stored or uploaded.

Common questions

How is WPM calculated?

Correct characters divided by 5, divided by the minutes of the test. Typing 1,000 correct characters in 4 minutes would be 50 WPM. Raw WPM uses every character you typed, right or wrong, so the gap between the two shows how much errors cost you.

What is a good typing speed?

Many people who type regularly land somewhere around 35 to 45 WPM, 60 WPM and above is fast, and dedicated typists go well past 100. Accuracy matters as much as speed: aim for 95% or better before pushing your pace.

Do corrected mistakes count?

They do not lower your WPM once fixed, because WPM counts the characters that end up matching. They do lower accuracy, which counts every keystroke as you typed it.

Why can't I paste text?

Paste and drag-and-drop are turned off in the typing box so the result measures your typing. Enter is ignored too, because the text has no line breaks.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, with the on-screen keyboard. Autocorrect can change words as you type, which may count as errors, so a physical keyboard gives a cleaner result.

Is what I type uploaded?

No. Your typing is compared to the text in your browser and only the scores are shown. Nothing is stored or sent anywhere.
