Spell text in the NATO phonetic alphabet
The NATO (ICAO) phonetic alphabet replaces each letter with a code word — Alpha for A, Bravo for B, through Zulu for Z — so letters survive a noisy phone call or radio where B, D, and P sound alike. This tool converts any text to those code words, spells digits as plain words, and names common punctuation instead of silently dropping it, so a listener can reproduce the exact string. Copy the spelled-out version, or press Speak to hear it read aloud using your browser's built-in speech synthesis. All conversion happens in your browser — nothing is uploaded.
Common questions
Which phonetic alphabet is this?
The modern NATO/ICAO spelling alphabet: Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Foxtrot, Golf, Hotel, India, Juliett, Kilo, Lima, Mike, November, Oscar, Papa, Quebec, Romeo, Sierra, Tango, Uniform, Victor, Whiskey, X-ray, Yankee, Zulu.
How are numbers and punctuation handled?
Digits are spelled as words — 0 is Zero, 9 is Nine. Common punctuation is named (period becomes Stop, @ becomes At, and so on), and spaces are shown as a (space) marker so word boundaries are clear.
What does the Speak button do?
It reads the phonetic words aloud using your browser's built-in Web Speech synthesis — no audio is downloaded or streamed. Spaces are turned into short pauses rather than the literal word so it sounds natural.
Why did Speak do nothing?
Some browsers block speech until you interact with the page, have no speech voices installed, or disable the Web Speech API. The text and copy features still work; only the spoken playback depends on that browser feature.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The text stays in your browser tab — conversion and speech both run locally, and nothing is sent to a server.
