How to count your spacebar presses and test your speed

How fast can you hit the spacebar? A spacebar counter answers it with a number, and the same test is a quick way to check whether a spacebar catches every press.

The fastest way

Open the Spacebar Counter, pick 5, 10, 30 or 60 seconds (or no limit) and press Space as fast as you can. The timer starts with your first press. When it runs out you get your presses and your presses per second.

What counts as a press

Each time the key goes down counts once. Holding Space makes the computer repeat the key on its own, and the counter ignores those repeats, so you cannot score by holding the key. Space does not scroll the page while you test.

Tips for a higher score

Checking a spacebar that misses presses

Switch to No limit and press Space slowly, once at a time, on different parts of the bar (left, middle, right). Every press should light the on-screen key and add one to the count. A spot that misses usually means dirt under the key or a worn stabilizer. To check the rest of the keyboard, use the Keyboard Tester.

A note on privacy

Presses are counted in your browser, and only the totals are shown. Nothing is stored or uploaded.

Common questions

How do I count spacebar presses?

Open the Spacebar Counter, choose a time limit and press Space. The timer starts on your first press and the counter shows your presses and presses per second when it ends. With No limit, it counts until you press Stop.

Why doesn't holding the key add more presses?

When you hold a key, the computer sends repeated key events on its own. Those are not real presses, so the counter ignores them and counts the held key once.

My spacebar sometimes misses presses. Can this help?

Yes. Press Space slowly, one press at a time, and watch the count and the on-screen key. If a press you felt does not light the key or add to the count, the key or its stabilizer may need cleaning or repair.
